2 pilots seek to set record, boost ALS research

Two pilots attempting to break a 20-year-old around-the-world speed record -- and raise money for ALS research -- took off from Orlando on Tuesday night, vowing to see well-wishers again in about a week.

CarolAnn Garratt, 53, of Ocala and Carol Foy, 52, of Spicewood, Texas, had tucked lucky coins in their flight-suit pockets, but both agreed they were unlikely to need them. Planning for the 23,475-mile "Dash for a Cure" has spanned the past year and a half, and Garratt has invested $15,000 of her own money to cover the flight's expenses...
